Josh Kilen :: Life Needs Better Story

Josh Kilen - Writer, marketing, author, philosopher

Josh Kilen - The Man, the Myth, The Legendary Warrior

This is a game…

Much of my history is apocryphal but I probably began my adventure in Tacoma Washington, possibly at Tacoma General Hospital.  The records remain hidden due to a sudden parental paranoia.  That said, I am reasonably sure that I came into this world on January 26th, in 1980.   At least that’s the date I chose to celebrate.  Found out later that Ellen DeGeneres celebrates her birthday on the same day, so I got that going for me.

Honestly, my childhood was prosaic with bits and bouts of random excitement.  Mostly I was a normal kid, living a normal kid life, but from time to time I was called upon to save the world.  There was the incident with the Libyan terrorists in ’86, the computerized killer house debacle of ’88, and the great alien navel war of ’87.  Each time my special talents were called upon to free the world from evil’s grip.  And the grip was tight.  Although, as should be obvious since you are free to read this, good prevailed in the end.  I wrote about those adventures in a spacial diary, complete with pictures, but that has since been classified.

As I grew in wisdom and stature, I yearned to be free from the all the death and destruction that filled my adolescent life.  I’d seen enough killing to last any lifetime.  And as many warriors do when they lay down arms, I took up religion.  However, growing up in the Church did nothing to quell my warrior spirit.  I laid down the sword to pick up the pen and do battle with the enemies of intellect and freedom.  I found the Church to be an easy target.

My problem it seems, is that I can’t accept things at face value.  I challenge accepted wisdom, prod and poke at what people take for granted.  I seek to understand and find those hidden connections that underlie disparate ideas.  This regularly lands me in the frying pan.  As a teenager I caused several rifts and schisms in the modern church.

Eventually I grew up, in a manner of speaking, and set off to secure my fortune.  But I ended up in college.  While attending though, I immersed myself in politics, student programs, started an underground newspaper and student movement, and then I discovered business and marketing.  My life was never the same.

To be completely honest, I always hated marketing and especially sales.  It always felt so inauthentic, as if I was trying to pull one over on the little guy or trick someone into buying something that they didn’t need.  Whenever I made a cold call or designed an ad, it always felt just a little dirty.  But I was still drawn to it, so I just KNEW there was a better way.

So I studied marketing, branding, sales, management, psychology, leadership, religion, philosophy, and general business concepts.  I knew that there was a connection, a key to human interaction and relationships.

After years of research and testing, I have my answers.  Most of them at least.

From warrior, to priest, to poet, to philosopher.  Now I am ready to begin a life as a teacher and writer.  I hope you will join me.
